Nuria Garcia Masip
1978– · Ibiza
Nuria Garcia Masip was born in 1978; Arabic Wikipedia gives Ibiza as her birthplace. She grew up between Spain and the United States. After finishing her BA in 1999 she went to Morocco, where she studied Islamic art and Maghribi script with the Moroccan calligrapher Belaid Hamidi. Back in Washington in 2000 she began ruq'a, thuluth and naskh with Mohamed Zakariya. In 2004 she moved to Istanbul to continue with Hasan Çelebi and Davut Bektaş, and in 2007 her three teachers granted her an ijaza in thuluth and naskh. She later took a master's degree in art history at the Sorbonne. She lives in Paris, where she teaches Arabic calligraphy, writes about its history and works as a calligrapher.
