Mirza Gholamreza Esfahani (Gholamreza Khoshnevis)
1830–1887 · Tehran
Mirza Gholamreza Esfahani was a calligrapher and inscription designer of Qajar Tehran, a master of nastaliq, shikasta-nastaliq and shikasta. Encyclopaedia Iranica gives his birth as 1245 AH (1829-30) in Tehran; Persian Wikipedia gives 1246 AH, probably in Isfahan. His father, Mirza Jan, was a confectioner. As a youth he came to the notice of Muhammad Shah, who had him teach princes and court officials, and his main nastaliq teacher was Sayyid Ali Hakkak. Under Naser al-Din Shah he lost his teaching post after being accused of links with the Babi movement, and was pardoned after pleading with the shah. He then worked under the patronage of Dust-Muhammad Khan Mo'ayyer al-Mamalek. His best-known public work is the set of inscriptions at the Sepahsalar mosque and madrasa in Tehran. He often signed 'Ya Ali madad'. He died in Tehran in 1304 AH (1886-87).
