The Masnavi opens by asking the reader to listen to a reed cut from the reed bed — a complaint about separation that is also the first thing anybody quotes from it.

يفتتح «المثنوي» بأن يطلب من القارئ أن ينصت إلى نايٍ قُطع من منبته — شكوى من الفراق، وهي أول ما يُقتبس منه.
