Which script should you choose?أيُّ خطٍّ تختار؟

Short answer: a name reads best in Diwani or Kufic, a verse in Naskh, a whole wall in Thuluth, something personal in Ruq'ah, and Persian poetry in Nastaliq. Every script below is free to try in the studio — write your own words and switch hands until one of them is obviously right.

الجواب المختصر: الاسم يُقرأ أفضل بالديواني أو الكوفي، والآية بالنسخ، والجدار كله بالثلث، والشخصيّ بالرقعة، والشعر الفارسي بالنستعليق. وكل خط أدناه مجاني للتجربة في الاستوديو — اكتب كلماتك وبدّل الخطوط حتى يتضح أيها الصحيح.

Diwani
الديواني
Flowing, interlocking and dense. Diwani was the chancery hand of the Ottoman court and it still reads as ceremony — it suits short phrases and single names, where the letters have room to knot together. It is the script most people mean when they picture Arabic calligraphy on a wall.
خطٌّ منسابٌ متشابك، كان خطَّ الدواوين العثمانية وما زال يُقرأ احتفاليًّا. يناسب العبارات القصيرة والأسماء المفردة حيث تجد الحروف متسعًا لتتعانق.
Not for length. Diwani knots its letters together and climbs, so a long sentence becomes a thicket — and it is genuinely hard to read at a glance even for fluent readers. Give it one line, or give it something else.
لا يصلح للطول. يشتبك الديواني ويرتفع، فتصير الجملة الطويلة أيكةً — وهو عسيرٌ على القراءة السريعة حتى على أهل اللغة. أعطه سطرًا واحدًا أو أعطِ غيره.

Thuluth
الثلث
Monumental and sweeping, with long verticals and deep curves. Thuluth needs scale — it is the script of mosque inscriptions for a reason, and a Thuluth line in a small frame loses the very thing that makes it Thuluth. Give it the largest piece in the room.
خطٌّ جليلٌ واسع الحركة، بألفٍ طويلة وأقواسٍ عميقة. يحتاج مساحة — ولذلك هو خطُّ كتابات المساجد؛ والثلث في إطارٍ صغير يفقد ما يجعله ثلثًا.
Not for small pieces. Everything that makes Thuluth worth having — the long verticals, the deep sweep — needs room, and at A4 on a desk it reads as a cramped version of itself rather than as the monumental hand it is.
لا يصلح للقطع الصغيرة. كل ما يستحق الثلث لأجله — الألف الطويلة والقوس العميق — يحتاج متسعًا؛ وفي مقاس A4 على مكتب يبدو نسخةً محشورة من نفسه.

Naskh
النسخ
The reading hand. Naskh was made to be legible at length — most printed Arabic still imitates it — so it suits longer phrases and full verses, where the point is that the words are read rather than admired from across a room.
خطُّ القراءة. وُضع ليُقرأ في الطول، وما زال أكثر المطبوع العربي يحاكيه، فيناسب العبارات الطويلة والآيات حيث المقصود أن تُقرأ لا أن تُرى من بعيد.
Not for drama. Naskh is even and quiet by design — that is why it is the reading hand — so it will not carry a wall the way Thuluth or Diwani does. Choose it when the words matter more than the gesture.
لا يصلح للأثر البصري القوي. النسخ مستوٍ هادئ بحكم وضعه — ولهذا هو خط القراءة — فلن يحمل جدارًا كما يحمله الثلث أو الديواني. اخترْه حين يكون المعنى أهم من الحركة.

Kufic
الكوفي
Angular and architectural, the oldest of them. Square Kufic in particular compresses a phrase into a geometric block that reads as design rather than as writing — it holds up small, it suits modern interiors, and it is the one script that works as a mark.
خطٌّ زاويٌّ معماريّ، وأقدمها. والكوفي المربع خاصةً يضغط العبارة في كتلةٍ هندسية تُقرأ تصميمًا لا كتابة؛ يصمد في الأحجام الصغيرة ويناسب البيوت الحديثة.
Not for reading. Square Kufic in particular compresses a phrase until it reads as pattern first and text second — many people will not decipher it without being told what it says, and for some pieces that is exactly wrong.
لا يصلح للقراءة. الكوفي المربع خاصةً يضغط العبارة حتى تُقرأ نقشًا قبل أن تُقرأ نصًّا — وكثيرون لن يفكّوها ما لم يُخبَروا بها، وهذا في بعض القطع خطأ محض.

Ruq'ah
الرقعة
Everyday handwriting — short strokes, no flourish, the hand Arabs actually write in. It reads as personal rather than ceremonial, which makes it the honest choice for a note, a name on a desk, or anything meant to feel written rather than commissioned.
خطُّ اليد اليومي: حركاتٌ قصيرة بلا زخرفة، وهو ما يكتب به الناس فعلًا. يُقرأ شخصيًّا لا احتفاليًّا، فيصلح للاسم على المكتب ولكلِّ ما يُراد له أن يبدو مكتوبًا لا مطلوبًا.
Not for ceremony. Ruqʿah is the hand of a shopping list and a signature — compact, unshowy, personal. On a wedding piece or a mosque panel it reads as under-dressed, and no amount of size fixes that.
لا يصلح للمقام الاحتفالي. الرقعة خط قائمة المشتريات والتوقيع — مُحكمةٌ غير متباهية، شخصية. وعلى قطعة عرس أو لوح مسجد تبدو دون المقام، ولا يعالج ذلك تكبيرُ المقاس.

Nastaliq
النستعليق
The Persian hand, hung on a diagonal, each word descending as it moves. Nastaliq carries poetry better than any other script — which is why the Persian couplets in this studio are set in it and nothing else.
الخطُّ الفارسي، مائلٌ معلَّق، تنحدر الكلمة فيه وهي تمضي. يحمل الشعر كما لا يحمله غيره، ولذلك تُكتب به الأبيات الفارسية هنا دون سواه.
Not for Arabic prose. Nastaliq hangs its words on a diagonal and was shaped around Persian verse; long Arabic sentences fight the baseline, and an Arabic reader will often find it beautiful and slow.
لا يصلح للنثر العربي. يعلّق النستعليق كلماته على قطرٍ مائل، وقد تشكّل حول الشعر الفارسي؛ والجمل العربية الطويلة تنازع السطر، ويجده القارئ العربي جميلًا بطيئًا في آن.
