Thuluth is the monumental hand of mosque inscriptions, and it is usually learned after Naskh, because its letters are Naskh letters made taller, deeper and freer. Below is the whole alphabet in Thuluth, each letter in the four shapes it takes — alone, opening a word, inside a word and closing it — set in TE Al Thuluth by the calligrapher Tharwat Emara, a licensed face. Compare each row with the Naskh page: the alif grows, the bowls of noon and yaa sweep deeper, and the tails that close a word stretch further than Naskh would allow. Trace sets each Thuluth letter faintly and gives you a reed nib at the Thuluth pen angle, so thick and thin come from the direction you pull, and the studio measures how much of the letter you covered. The printable sheet sets the Thuluth model at the top of an A4 page with rows to trace over by hand. Thuluth needs scale: practise it large, with a broad pen, before you ever try it small.
