Faramarz Pilaram
1937–1983 · Tehran & Mahmudabad
Faramarz Pilaram was born in Tehran on 10 April 1937. He studied at the School of Decorative Arts for Boys, where Mahmoud Farshchian taught him traditional painting, and graduated in 1959; he then took degrees at the Faculty of Decorative Arts in Tehran, finishing a master's in painting and interior design in 1968. In the early 1960s he became one of the founders of the Saqqakhaneh movement, which joined modern painting with Iranian folk and religious imagery. His work passed through figurative and decorative phases into a calligraphic one, in which he broke Persian letters into abstract, repeated rhythms rather than writing legible texts. He won prizes at the Tehran Biennials of 1962 and 1964 and at Venice in 1962, co-founded the Iran Gallery in 1964, and taught design at Iran's University of Science and Technology until 1981. He died of a heart attack in Mahmudabad in 1983; some sources give 1982. His paintings are in MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum and the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art.
