Diwani — the sultan's secret handالديواني — يد السلطان السرية

Diwani was born in the Ottoman chancery — the diwan — and perfected by Ibrahim Munif and later Sheikh Hamdullah's school in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It was a state secret: its dense, undulating lines and unmarked words made royal decrees hard to forge and harder to tamper with. Letters ride each other in waves, baselines curve like a ship's wake, and nothing is ruled — the script breathes. Its ornate cousin, Diwani Jali, fills every void with dots and flourishes until the text becomes a golden thicket. It remains the script of ceremony: wedding invitations, royal correspondence, and names written like decrees.
