Calligraphy has always been taught the same way. The teacher writes a letter, you copy it, the teacher points out what is off, and you write it again. This is that same routine in your browser, for Ruq’ah, Naskh, Thuluth, Diwani and Farsi.

How it works

1. Pick a script. Start with Ruq’ah if you want better everyday handwriting, or Naskh if you want the classical path; Thuluth grows out of Naskh.
2. Follow the path. Forty lessons per script: the pen and the dot, every letter by family, joins, words, complete lines from a calligrapher’s master pieces, and a composed page.
3. Write with a real nib. Trace with a mouse, a finger or an Apple Pencil: the Studio cuts a reed nib to your script’s pen angle, so thick and thin come from the direction you pull.
4. From the model to memory. Each letter is written over the faint model, then inside the hollow model, then beside the model, then from memory. You move on when your score passes.

Can you really learn calligraphy online?

You learn the forms, the proportions and the order of practice online, and the Studio measures every attempt. The hand still has to practise on paper, which is why every lesson has a printable A4 sheet.

How is a letter measured in dots?

The dot is the unit of measure in Arabic calligraphy: the pen set down and drawn its own width. The alif is the yardstick. It stands five dots tall in Naskh, seven in Thuluth, six in Diwani, and three in Ruq’ah and in Farsi. The Studio sets the dots beside the letter, corner on corner in one column as on a master’s sheet, and measures the height of your letter in the same dots.

Is it free?

Does AI write the calligraphy?

No. The letters are set from real typefaces and a calligrapher’s own pieces. The software only measures what you write, on the screen and on your own sheet.
