Ferdowsi spent about three decades on the Shahnameh, a single work of some fifty thousand couplets. Lines from it are short because the poem is long: he had to say things once and well.

أمضى الفردوسي نحو ثلاثة عقود في «الشاهنامة»، عمل واحد في نحو خمسين ألف بيت. وأبياته قصيرة لأن القصيدة طويلة: كان عليه أن يقول الشيء مرة واحدة وأن يُحسنها.
