Why there is more than one correct spelling

Arabic writes short vowels only as optional marks, and it has sounds Latin does not — and the reverse. So a Latin name rarely has one Arabic spelling; it has a best few, and which is right depends on how your family says it and how they have always written it.

• Noor / Nour / Nur is one Arabic word, «نور», spelled three ways in Latin — not three names.
• P has no Arabic letter. Persian and Urdu add one (پ); Arabic substitutes ب. "Peter" becomes بيتر, and both choices are defensible.
• Long vowels are letters, short vowels are marks. "Sara" can be سارة or سارا depending on the ending your family uses — neither is a mistake.
